The Golden Mile is a sub region of the South Okanagan Wine region between Osoyoos and Oliver. Located on an east facing bench backed by low mountains, the terroir, (the complete natural environment in which a particular wine is produced, including factors such as the soil, topography, and climate.)  temperatures and location have resulted in ideal growing conditions for wine producing grapes. The Golden Mile is located off the valley floor in the upper bench, this is very significant due to extra frost free days. This is also ideal from ground cropping and the warmth from the rocks both benefits the crops and extends the growing season.

Traditionally grapes need the longer growing season to properly ripen and reach full flavour profile, so the fact that the Golden Mile Bench can be 6 to 8 degrees warmer than the valley floor along the highway 97 is significant. Other factors in the Terroir, include the sandy soil, the mix of gravel to allow for drainage and clay to retain nutrients. Bill Eggert, Winemaker who established Fairview Cellars in 1993 on the Golden Mile’s northern tip, says that wines grown on the Golden Mile are more complex that those grown elsewhere in the Valley.
